This is a letter from a US citizen to the US Secretary of State
Dear Mr. Secretary:
At a budget hearing before congress today, you clearly and forthrightly
stated that the United States does not take land for itself or oppress
people. I would like to point out that there is at least one
embarrassing blemish on our record.
For the past 60 years, the state of Israel has been pursuing what
amounts to a policy of apart-heid against the indigenous population of
Israel. The Palestinians have no rights, no vote and their land has
been routinely taken away from them. This will not stop soon, since
Sharon has requested 375 million dollars in his budget for settlements
for this year. All this in the face of general condemnation from the
world, and even our own claims that the settlements go against our, the
US, policy. More than half the people under Israeli control, the Arab
half, have been squeezed onto 20 percent of the land, and they have most
certainly been oppressed. Even Israeli soldiers understand this and
have been signing petitions against the occupation.
This is why the situation in the Middle East is falling to pieces...
When the United States gives billions of dollars in unconditional aid
along with military and diplomatic support to Israel, then the US policy
and the Israeli policy become the same! We, the US, are taking land and
oppressing people. I find myself to be, for all practical purposes, an
Israeli citizen and bearing the same guilt in this matter. How do you
feel?
When will we, the US, seriously begin exploring ways to correct this
nightmare that we have created. I am getting tired of being an
oppressor!
