April 2010: A law banning smoking has been introduced into Syria, although the whole population smoke and no one will abide by this rule. The ban targets public places, from restaurants and cafes to schools and hospitals. It also covers parks, sports centres, movie theatres, museums and public transportation. A man was shot dead when he asked another man not to smoke at a restaurant.
